Aegina has been plunged into mourning over the sudden death of a 20-month-old baby who drowned in his home while eating a brioche cake.
According to npress reports, the food appears to have caused a blockage in the toddler’s airway and the condition immediately became critical.
The girl’s parents immediately took her to the island’s Health Centre, where doctors and nurses made repeated resuscitation efforts, while the assistance of a private doctor was requested.
For a short period of time there were signs of improvement, which raised hopes, but a few hours later the situation deteriorated.
The baby was organized to be taken to Piraeus and was transported by a Coast Guard boat, while an ambulance and police forces were already waiting at the scene for the fastest possible transfer to a hospital.
Despite the huge mobilization, the child unfortunately did not make it. He was taken to Tzaneio Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death.
