The Directorate for Combating Organized Crime has arrested a 50-year-old foreigner for importing and transporting a large quantity of cannabis into Greece.
According to the Greek Police, the man was found on Thursday evening (30/4) at the port of Igoumenitsa driving a tractor with a trailer, in which, after a check, 48 packages of cannabis, weighing a total of 507 kilograms and 500 grams were found. The drugs were placed on pallets, along with other legal cargo, in order to conceal them.
The arrest of the 50-year-old was carried out in the framework of an operation by the Sub-Directorate for the Prosecution of Narcotics Crime, following the use of information and coordinated actions, with the assistance of the Department of General Affairs and International Cooperation, police services of Igoumenitsa as well as officers and a detection dog of the competent port authority.
As it emerged from the investigation of the ELAS, the quantity of cannabis was received in the second half of April from an area of Spain and was transported by sea to Greece via Italy.
As noted by the ELAS, the estimated economic benefit from the trafficking of this quantity exceeds 1.7 million euros.
During the operation, the tractor, the vehicle, the sum of 120 euros and two mobile phones were also seized.
The arrested man is being taken to the relevant prosecuting authority.
