The 42-year-old Albanian national who raised a gun against police officers in the early hours of the morning, during a check by men of the Organized Crime Division at the Dilaveri coast, in Mikrolimano, is said to have a serious criminal past.

The 42-year-old man, who was injured after using a police officer’s service weapon, was taken to hospital where he is under guard.

According to information from the EL.AS, the 42-year-old had previously concerned the authorities, as in 2019 he had escaped from a prisoner transfer in Greece, holding a female police officer hostage and was also a prisoner in an Albanian prison.

The bloody incident occurred when a team of eight police officers from the Extortion Department attempted to carry out a check on the 42-year-old man.

According to the same reports, he reacted by surprise, pulling out a gun and attempting to turn on the officers. One of the officers used his service weapon, wounding him before he could fire.

Immediately after the incident, the area was cordoned off by strong police forces, while a team from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Department (EOD) rushed to the scene, as three weapons and a bag with six grenades were found during the search.

Authorities are examining the 42-year-old’s criminal record and whether he is linked to organised crime cases.
