Today, on Palm Sunday, in the holy city of Messolonghi, the events of honour and remembrance will be held to mark the 200th anniversary of the heroic Exodus of the Free Besieged, with France as the country of honour.

The President of the Republic, Konstantinos Tasoulas, the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the President of PASOK – Movement for Change, Nikos Androulakis and the President of SYRIZA, Socrates Famellos are expected to attend the events, as announced.

The religious events started at 7:00 this morning at the Metropolitan Church of Agios Spyridon, where a solemn polyarchy Mass is celebrated, presided over by the Metropolitan of Chalkis, Chrysostomos, while at 10:20 a doxology will be chanted in the presence of the President of the Republic, Constantinos Tasoulas.

At 11:00, a procession will start from the Metropolitan Church of St. Spyridon and proceed to the Garden of Heroes, where a trisagion will be held, followed by the laying of wreaths at the Heroes’ Tomb, while a representative of the government will deliver the solemn speech of the day.

Afterwards, the winners of the sacrifice walk will be awarded, while the high-pitched singer, Vivian Douglas, will perform the dirge, “Long live Messolonghi”, with the participation of the choir of the Municipality of Messolonghi.

At 2:00 pm the transfer of the sacred relics from the Garden of Heroes to the Museum of History and Art – Gallery will take place, while at 6:00 in the afternoon, the return of the Exodus Icon will take place with a procession from the Garden of Heroes to the ceremonial hall of the Museum of History and Art – Gallery.
