A new case of telephone fraud involving an elderly victim was recorded in Corfu, with fraudsters extorting a large sum of money by pretending to be employees of the DEDDIE.
According to information, the perpetrators contacted a 79-year-old man by phone and managed to convince him that he had to hand over money for an alleged procedure related to the DEDDIE.
The elderly man handed over a total of around €200,000, as well as a gold ring, to an accomplice of the fraudsters, who then disappeared.
When he realized he had been a victim of fraud, the 79-year-old immediately informed the authorities and filed a complaint with the Greek police.
After investigations by police authorities, three people allegedly involved in the case were identified and arrested: a 26-year-old man, a 32-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman. Meanwhile, authorities are continuing to search for another 29-year-old accomplice.
Around 13,000 euros were found during the searches, while the fate of the rest of the money remains unknown so far.
The authorities reiterate warnings to citizens – especially the elderly – to be particularly cautious against telephone communications from unknown persons asking for money or personal information.
