A police operation by the Crete Organized Crime Unit has been underway since this morning on the island to dismantle a criminal organization associated with illegal OPEKEPE subsidies.
Members of the organisation are accused of being involved in fraud against the financial interests of the European Union, as well as making false declarations to obtain subsidies.
The business of EL.AS. is focused in areas of Heraklion, Rethymnon and Lassithi and so far 20 members of the organization have been arrested, including two accountants and three K.Y.D. managers.
The illegal financial benefit, according to the evidence so far, is more than 3.000,000 euros.
After the completion of the operation, announcements are expected from the ELAS.
