The issue of Turkey’s “ongoing threats against Greece” is being brought to the European Parliament’s Finance Committee for discussion by ND MEP George Avtias, according to a statement.
In addition, in a letter to Finance Commissioners Piort Serafin and Valdis Dombrovskis, he calls for “the activation of all foreseen mechanisms for cutting funds against a country that directly threatens a Member State of the European Union” and recalls that the “European Council Summit will discuss Article 42.7 of the Treaty on European Union, which provides for European assistance to an EU Member State threatened by a third country.”
The text of Mr Avtia’s letter, as shared with the announcement, is as follows:
“Dear Commissioners,
Turkey, through statements by the Minister of Defence, directly reiterates threats against Greece, an EU member state, repeating the “Blue Homeland” narrative and reiterates the issue of the demilitarisation of the Aegean islands.
With this letter, I request the activation of all foreseen mechanisms for cutting funds against a country that directly threatens a member state of the European Union. Turkey’s threats have been accompanied by new violations of Greek airspace. I remind you that the European Council Summit will discuss Article 42.7 of the Treaty on European Union, which provides for European assistance to an EU Member State threatened by a third country. I want you to know that Greece exercises its sovereign rights with full adherence to international law and does not accept revisionist and arbitrary approaches that attempt to turn unilateral interpretations into political fait accompli. The Greek Armed Forces maintain an uninterrupted high level of operational readiness and deterrence, consistently defending the national sovereignty and national security of Greece.”
