A difficult battle is being fought by the Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister, George Mylonakis, who is being treated in the intensive care unit of the Evangelismos Hospital, following an emergency operation for a ruptured brain aneurysm.

The prime minister’s close associate fainted yesterday, Wednesday, during the morning coffee at the daily government meeting at the Maximos building. He was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent a series of diagnostic and imaging tests. A ruptured cerebral aneurysm was diagnosed and an embolisation was then performed to stop the bleeding.

At noon yesterday, the procedure of embolization of the vessel was completed and was successful. The deputy minister remains intubated in intensive care while doctors will carry out a series of clinical tests to assess any impact on key functions, and they believe the next 48 hours are critical to his health.

“George is going through a great adventure. He has had very good and fast care which in stroke time is critical. His condition at the moment is stable, which is optimistic news, he has stabilized. One cannot say with certainty what will happen, it is a battle but he is a young man, a strong organism,” Health Minister Adonis Georgiades said in a statement on Wednesday night.

“He went to the ambulance immediately. For the stroke, time counts a lot. If everything is done within an hour you can prevent almost all the damage,” he added.

One of the two doctors who operated on George Mylonakis said, for his part, that the next 10 days are critical for the course of his health. Evtichios Archontakis, an interventional neuroradiologist, speaking to ANT1, said that “we will have 10 days of agony”, explaining that “what we are doing is to ensure that no aneurysm breaks again”.

“We acted quickly, the aneurysm was ruled out immediately. Now we wait,” he added afterwards, declining to reveal further details because of personal privacy.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the hospital in the morning and in the evening to check on the condition of his close associate, who has been serving as deputy prime minister since June 2024.
