On Tuesday morning, 21-4-2026, passers-by in Heraklion were confronted with an unpleasant sight when they realized that the bust of Nikos Xylouris had been beheaded at the monument located in Cyprus Square (opposite Oasis), very close to the center of Heraklion. The incident caused outrage, while the municipal authority was immediately mobilized to restore the consequences of the vandalism.
“It is outrageous all this is happening and however causes indignation, such an action,” said the deputy mayor of culture of the Municipality of Heraklion, Rena Papadaki-Skalidi, who made known that procedures have already begun for the restoration of the sculpture, the late Aspasia Papadoperaki.
