Shock and deep sadness have been caused in the local community of Heraklion by the cold-blooded murder of a 20-year-old man, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon (5/5) in Ammoudara, one of the busiest spots in the area.
How the incident unfolded
According to initial reports, the incident began when the 54-year-old alleged perpetrator blocked the path of the young man’s vehicle, causing a deliberate collision in order to immobilize him. A heated confrontation ensued, which escalated dangerously within seconds when the offender pulled out a gun.
The 20-year-old attempted to flee, finding temporary shelter at a nearby lodging house. However, the 54-year-old chased him and opened fire. Witnesses say he shot him at least four times, causing the victim to collapse on the roadway, suffering multiple injuries.
Panic in front of dozens of witnesses
The incident unfolded in front of dozens of eyewitnesses, causing scenes of panic. Passers-by and residents ran away in fear, while tourists at the scene initially thought it was a road accident.
Police forces and an ambulance of the ambulance service immediately rushed to the scene, which transported the injured man to the hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead. A woman who was nearby fainted and required medical attention.
The possible motive for the attack
Authorities are looking at personal differences that appear to be linked to an earlier car crash as a primary motive. The 54-year-old allegedly held the victim responsible for the death of his 17-year-old son, who died in a car crash about three years ago.
Arrests and case progress
Some time after the incident, the 54-year-old turned himself in to authorities and was arrested. His wife, who was allegedly in the vehicle during the attack and was an active participant, was subsequently arrested.
According to witnesses, the woman got out of the car after the shooting to check on the victim’s condition before the couple headed to authorities.
The 2023
The case appears to be linked to a traffic accident that occurred in 2023 on Heraklion’s coastal avenue, when a vehicle in which the 17-year-old son of the perpetrator was riding swerved and crashed into a pillar, resulting in his fatal injury.
The investigation into the murder has been taken over by the Heraklion Security, which is collecting testimonies and visual material in order to fully clarify the circumstances of the tragedy.
The local community remains shocked, with the incident bringing critical issues such as vigilante justice and the dangerous escalation of violence to the forefront.
