A total of 3,431 checks were carried out on vehicles over the Easter weekend in Crete and 1,081 offences were recorded. These are the results of intensive traffic controls carried out by the Traffic Services of the Police Directorates of Chania, Rethymnon, Heraklion and Lassithi and the Traffic Department of the Northern Road Axis of Crete, from 10 to 13 April 2026, in the context of increased traffic for the Easter celebrations.

According to the police, the purpose of the checks was to address delinquent and dangerous driving behaviours, with the aim of ensuring the smooth and safe movement of citizens and safeguarding human life.

Of the offences recorded during the checks, 138 involved speeding, 40 were driving under the influence of alcohol, 9 were not wearing a protective helmet, 7 were not wearing a seat belt, 15 were driving without a licence and 5 were red light violations. Also, 9 offences involved the use of a mobile phone, 13 oncoming traffic, 16 illegal overtaking, 47 illegal manoeuvres and 818 other offences.

As stated in a relevant announcement, “the General Regional Police Directorate of the Region of Crete reminds all drivers and users of the road network that proper road behavior and compliance with traffic rules are basic requirements for both safe travel and the avoidance of traffic accidents.”
