The European Commission today responded to US President Trump’s threats to impose 25% tariffs on European cars and trucks, stressing “we will keep our options open to protect EU interests.”
A Commission spokesman told reporters that the EU is honouring its commitments contained in the Joint Statement in line with standard legislative practice, keeping the US administration fully informed throughout the process. As the spokesperson stressed, “we remain in close contact with our counterparts, including as we seek to clarify US commitments (…) We remain fully committed to a predictable and mutually beneficial transatlantic relationship. Should the US take measures inconsistent with the Joint Statement, we will keep our options open to protect EU interests.”
