This morning Friday morning, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Crete.
According to the Revised Solution of the Geodynamic Institute, the tremor occurred 25km southwest of Goudoura in Lassithi at 06:18 and had a focal depth of 9.7km.
Earlier, the Geodynamic Institute’s Automatic Solution gave the earthquake at 5.5 Richter and 7km NW of Goudoura Lassithi.
The earthquake was felt in many areas of the island upsetting residents as it had a long duration.
Lassithi deputy regional governor Yannis Androulakis told ERT: “The earthquake had a duration and was felt throughout southwestern Crete, I have reports from Sitia to Heraklion.
Ethymios Lekkas: We are actually waiting for the recordings to be able to assess the whole situation
.
As Euth. Lekkas to ERT “We have an earthquake south of Lassithi in the sea area at 5 km depth. We have not yet seen the exact data of the earthquake because it is the automatic system, I think it is an earthquake that would have been felt over a wide range in Crete and in Kasos and Karpathos, but we have no more data at the moment. We are basically waiting for the recordings to be able to assess the whole situation.
It is near Hersos, it must have been particularly felt throughout Lassithi and the rest of Crete. At the moment we are calculating the exact size and the exact location, at 5 kilometers the earthquake is superficial, but the individual data and the exact data we will know in a little while.”
