Last Wednesday night, there was a serious accident on the Egnatia Road, on the traffic flow from Igoumenitsa to Ioannina, in the tunnel of Psaka Thesprotia.

According to reports, the accident occurred when a Bulgarian truck driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the pavement inside the tunnel on the Egnatia Odos.

The impact was violent, as the truck ripped up slabs and sections of pavement over a length of about 50 metres before finally coming to a halt.

According to the same information, the breathalyser test the driver was given reportedly showed 1.15 grams per litre of alcohol in his blood, and he refused to get into the ambulance that arrived at the scene.

In fact, even after the traffic police arrived, he allegedly attempted to drive off in the immobilised truck.

The ELAS men arrested him, while a “queue” of vehicles formed at the spot for some time until traffic was normalised.

No injuries were reported as a result of the crash, but damage to the inside of the tunnel is extensive.
