China has warned that new legislative initiatives in the United States regarding restrictions on microchip exports could cause serious disruptions to the global supply chain.

The country’s Ministry of Commerce said on Saturday it was closely monitoring developments in the US Congress, accusing Washington of increasingly invoking “national security” reasons to impose trade restrictions. According to Beijing, this approach risks upsetting the international economic balance.

The concerns intensify after the House Foreign Affairs Committee decided to advance a series of bills aimed at restricting China’s access to advanced technologies, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence and semiconductors.

Among them stands out the Multilateral Alignment of Technology Controls bill, which provides for tighter controls on exports of advanced microprocessor manufacturing equipment.

Although the Trump administration has not moved on to extensive new restrictive measures, movement in Congress suggests a growing trend toward tighter technology controls against China.

Beijing said it would carefully consider the potential impact and warned that it would take necessary measures to protect domestic firms, without giving details.

The stance reflects growing concern that the tension in trade relations could negatively affect the growth of the semiconductor industry globally.
