British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper today called for a “swift resolution” to the Middle East conflict and accused Iran of “holding the global economy hostage.”

“We want to see a quick resolution (of the conflict) that will restore regional security and stability and allow the Strait of Hormuz to reopen,” she said on the second day of the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting near Paris.

“Frankly, Iran should not be able to hold the global economy hostage through a strait through which international sea lanes pass,” he added.

At the same time, the British minister noted that both her country and its G7 allies were deeply concerned about the growing ties between Russia and Iran, after European countries accused Moscow of helping Tehran target US forces in the Middle East.

“We are deeply concerned about the ties between Russia and Iran,” Cooper noted.
