An incident bordering on the absurd occurred in the municipality of Aigialia, when the services sent a notice of a debt of 1,500 euros to a man who… has been gone for three decades. As patrapress.gr reveals, the mistake occurred during a massive effort by the municipality to collect unpaid debts from cemeteries, sending over 25,000 notices without the necessary prior cross-checking of data.

The “racket” for the family plot finally reached the hands of the deceased’s son, who was surprised to contact the department to explain the obvious. But instead of an apology and correction of the error, the officials transferred the debt to the son’s name, and according to reports, the response he received when he explained that his father had been dead since 1993 was: “If he can’t come himself, you come”. In fact, additional charges were added to the original amount due to the age of the debt, making the situation even more outrageous.
