Security checks by officers of the Piraeus Port Authority are being stepped up on coastal shipping vessels ahead of the summer season, with the aim of combating drug trafficking and enhancing passenger safety.

As part of these inspections, officers from the Piraeus Port Authority arrested a 20-year-old Greek woman, who is accused of violating drug laws.

The young woman was identified during an inspection conducted on a passenger-car ferry at the main passenger port of Piraeus, with the assistance of a specially trained drug-detection police dog from the Coast Guard. During the inspection, a nylon package containing a total of 52.5 grams of cocaine was found in her possession.

Port authorities also seized two cell phones, while the narcotic substance is to be sent to the General Chemical State Laboratory for analysis. According to initial estimates, the street value of the seized quantity exceeds 2,600 euros.

The case is part of the broader context of increased inspections being carried out by the Coast Guard at passenger terminals and on coastal shipping vessels at the start of the summer tourist season, when passenger traffic to the islands sees a significant increase. The inspections are expected to continue with undiminished intensity at all major ports across the country.
