Kyriakos Mitsotakis announces extraordinary measures to support society due to the impact on the Greek economy of the fierce war of the allies against Iran. “No one will stand alone against the storm,” the Prime Minister stresses.
“Developments now threaten all countries with a new escalation of revaluations” as the war against Iran rages on, Kyriakos Mitsotakis warns in a statement published in the Sunday newspaper “Realnews” (22.05.2026), and stresses that “therefore, the European reaction cannot be delayed”.
“The prudent management of the national economy has created space for supporting households and businesses without destabilising the budget”, the Prime Minister stresses, adding that “no one will stand alone against the storm”.
In his statement to “Realnews” Kyriakos Mitsotakis says:
“The escalating conflict in Iran and the Middle East is causing chain effects on both a geopolitical and economic level. In such an environment, no country is in a position to claim that it is fully shielded. That is why it is imperative to quickly resume developments in the field of diplomacy and defend peace and stability in accordance with international law and our country’s inter-state agreements.
At the same time, our response to the economic landscape was immediate, imposing a maximum profit rate on fuel, food and basic consumer goods until June 30. A targeted intervention to support income against inflation, but also a preventive measure against profligacy.
In the meantime, of course, our country is not remaining a passive observer. It has already spread a protective shield over Cyprus together with other European powers. We are also assisting neighbouring Bulgaria. While in any case we are strengthening our deterrent capacity by maintaining our diplomatic readiness.
This is a policy which is also accompanied by the active presence of Greek defence systems in the region, with the sole aim of protecting international energy security. A guarantee of peace and stability, in accordance with international law and our country’s international agreements.
There is, however, no room for complacency. Defence, therefore, in the new crisis must be united and European. With common planning and with the fiscal flexibility of the member states as a crucial tool. Only this, after all, will allow the shocks to be absorbed before they are passed on to societies.
Of course, our energy mix is more diversified today than it was at the time of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. And prudent management of the national economy has created room to support households and businesses without destabilising the Budget.
But as the tension is prolonged, the fronts of instability are widening on many levels: in shipping and energy, in raw materials and in production costs. Developments that now threaten all countries with a new escalation of price increases. The European response cannot therefore be delayed.
The European response can therefore not be delayed.
In any case, however, the government will ensure that no citizen stands alone against the storm. As we have proven in every difficulty, we will fight the battle with the weapons of economic efficiency and political stability. With determination, in a world of uncertainty.”
