Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Amazon Senior Vice President Panos Panay during their meeting at the Maximos Mansion.

During the meeting, Mr. Panay briefed the Prime Minister on the progress of the AWS investment, noting that the new Local Zone in Athens will be generally available this coming July. The new infrastructure is expected to enable businesses and organizations operating in Greece to store and process data within the country, meet local data storage requirements, and develop applications with exceptionally low latency.

At the same time, it will provide access to computing power, storage, networking, and artificial intelligence services, with high standards of security and reliability.

A significant part of the discussion also focused on strengthening the presence of the Greek language within Amazon’s ecosystem of products and services. Mr. Panay noted that in the future, users of the Kindle and Alexa platforms will be able to use the Greek alphabet and language in a way that reflects its natural usage, without automated adjustments.

Furthermore, the meeting included an overview of Amazon’s existing investments in Greece, while new investment opportunities in sectors of strategic importance were explored. Particular emphasis was placed on infrastructure related to the Amazon Leo satellite internet service, investments in green energy, as well as the development of research centers and cutting-edge research facilities.

For his part, Mr. Mitsotakis highlighted the high caliber of the country’s workforce and Greek universities, noting that they are key factors in developing a strong startup ecosystem, as well as in attracting research and technology investments to various regions of Greece.
