Haris Romas appeared on Renos Charalambidis’s show and spoke about his childhood, his difficult relationship with his father, his decision to pursue acting, and his medical studies.
The well-known actor and screenwriter spoke about the family environment in which he grew up, emphasizing that, although his family enjoyed financial comfort, there was no shortage of difficulties and emotional voids.
“My father was a major businessman. My parents’ relationship was troubled. I experienced the full spectrum of childhood difficulties, including a lack of communication and attention. Despite all that, my parents loved us. But we went through hard times, and that, perhaps, helped my psyche become more intense and my emotions to ‘boil,’” he said.
He then described the reaction he encountered when he told his parents that he wanted to pursue art.
“I told my parents that I’d like to try something like that. My father’s response was: ‘My child, my boy, you’re crazy’. I told him that I felt something was happening inside me and that I could pursue it, and he replied, ‘You’re wrong about that’. He told me to choose something that would secure my future and make us all proud.”
Haris Romas added that his father’s attitude ultimately served as motivation. “You shouldn’t tell a child that they aren’t capable of getting into a school. It made me anxious but also determined. And I was admitted to the University of Athens School of Medicine. I earned my medical degree after ten years. I didn’t pursue a specialty, as I had already turned to theater. I was a ‘perpetual student,’ while also pursuing acting. “I was a classmate of Giorgos Patoulis,” he said.
