The transformation of PPC from an energy company to a clean energy and technology company today and then to the adoption of Artificial Intelligence and to its activity in the data centre sector was described by PPC President and CEO and Eurelectric Vice President George Stassis, speaking today at the European organisation’s annual conference in Helsinki.
“PPC was an electricity company. Today it is a clean technology company. Tomorrow PPC will be a data centre company, maybe an AI applications company,” he said.
Mr. Stasis stressed that the energy and digital transitions are now happening simultaneously and reiterated the need for data centre infrastructure, which requires large amounts of energy, to be deployed in a way that will not burden household electricity bills due to the increase in demand.
He noted that PPC has already adopted cloud computing solutions for storing its data and is gradually moving to deploy AI applications in all areas where it operates.
Indicatively, AI tools are being applied in areas such as the integration of Renewable Energy Sources in the market, maintenance of facilities, energy management, reduction of energy losses. He also mentioned the development of AI applications in cooperation with the shipping industry and the legal department of PPC.
“We are at the intersection of energy and technology and we feel we are getting closer and closer to the technology space,” he said.
The PPC chief stressed the need to develop data centres in Europe for security reasons as to where data is stored and underlined that the EU has a great opportunity to create value from new technology, but does not have much time to do so.
