A deeply moving post was made by Kelly Kampaki, mother of the late Emma Karyotakis, saying goodbye to the man who received her daughter’s liver after the organ donation that took place in 2022.

Emma died at the age of 21, following a car accident in Thessaloniki, Greece, when she was swept away by a car. Her family then made the brave decision to donate her organs, giving life and hope to seven of her fellow human beings.

One of them was Mr. John, who received the young student’s liver and managed to live for three more years. The news of his death was particularly moving to Emma’s mother, who now considered him part of her family.

In her shocking message, she wrote, among other things:

“Today is a day of pain… Today I say goodbye to a Man who I may never have had the chance to hug and cry in his arms, I may have known him only a little and only over the phone, but he had something of mine, something precious about him and that made him special… he made him family.”

And he continued:

“Have a good journey into the light, my dear Mr. Yannis… there, in addition to your loved ones, an unknown but familiar soul will be waiting to greet you.”

Kelly Kampaki’s post reminded in the most human way the power of organ donation and the bond that is created between the families of donors and recipients, even if they never meet in person. Emma’s story continues to be a symbol of giving and solidarity, as through her loss she gave life to others.
