Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy Nikos Tagaras has passed away at the age of 70.
The sad news was made known by his son, Christos, in a post on social media. “Farewell to the FOS My father…You were and will be my everlasting superhero. Now you will rest…… I love you very much…,” he wrote.
Nikos Tagaras was born in Chiliomodi, Corinthia. He was a graduate of the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens. During his studies he was repeatedly awarded with a scholarship by the State Scholarship Foundation (IKY).
‘He practiced the profession of civil engineering for 37 years and served the institution of local government both in the first and second degree as President of the Community of Chiliomodi, as Mayor of Tenea, as President of the Local Union of Municipalities and Communities of Corinthia and then as Prefect of Corinth during the eight years 2003 – 2010.
He was elected MP of Corinthia in the elections of 6 May 2012, in the elections of 17 June 2012, in the elections of 7 July 2019, in the elections of 21 May 2023 and re-elected in the elections of 25 June 2023 in the same electoral district.
In the House of Representatives, he has served as Chairman of the Special Standing Committee on Research and Technology, Chairman of the House Special Standing Committee on Road Safety, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee on Production and Trade, and Member of the Standing Committee on Public Administration, Public Order and Justice. He has also served as Chairman of the Greece-Switzerland Parliamentary Friendship Group and as a member of the Greece-Portugal, Greece-Luxembourg and Greece-Croatia Parliamentary Friendship Groups.
In 2014, he served as Deputy Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, holding the portfolio of Spatial Planning, Urban Planning, Forests, Water, Environmental – Energy Inspections, management of the Operational Programme Environment and Sustainable Development (OP Environment and Sustainable Development), coordination of Environmental Actions, etc.
From 2020 to 2023, he served as Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy with the portfolio of Spatial Planning and Urban Environment, Environmental Licensing, as well as Electronic Governance and Geospatial Information.
He had two sons and four grandchildren.
