The Andravida Air Base, which is destined to become the new operational “headquarters” of the Greek fifth-generation F-35 fighters, is undergoing a complete reconstruction and extensive modernization. According to the Air Force’s planning, the base will be transformed into the country’s most modern air facility in terms of infrastructure, technological equipment and operational capabilities.
The planned interventions are considered particularly extensive, as the F-35 requires special support facilities, advanced security systems, new maintenance areas and upgraded operational infrastructure. Andravida is expected to receive fully upgraded facilities capable of meeting the increased requirements of the state-of-the-art fighter aircraft.
Indicative of the scale of the projects is the example of Turkey’s 7th Main Air Base in Malatya, which was selected to host the Turkish F-35s before Ankara’s exclusion from the programme. Modernization work there began in late 2017 and was completed about two years later, shortly before Turkey was permanently removed from the U.S. fighter program.
The Andravida upgrade is part of the overall plan to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Air Force and marks Greece’s transition to a new era of air power, with the integration of the F-35 into the Greek arsenal in the coming years.
