The prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Konstantinos Tzavellas, has been ordered to study the possibility of an appeal against the verdict of the Piraeus Court of Appeal’s judicial council on the release from prison of Alexandros Yiotopoulos, who was sentenced to 17 life sentences for the actions of the terrorist organisation “17November”.

A copy of the verdict is awaited by Mr Tzavellas and he has already instructed the deputy prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Sophocles Logothetis, to study it.

In any case, according to the criminal law, polygamists are released from prison after 25 years of actually serving their sentence. That is, A. Yiotopoulos would normally be released in about a year.

The 82-year-old A. Yiotopoulos was released after 24 years of imprisonment and it was his fifth consecutive attempt, following a negative recommendation by the prosecutor of the first instance court, the first instance court and a negative recommendation by the prosecutor who recommended to the court of appeal.
