Criminal charges have been brought against the 44-year-old driver involved in the fatal car crash in Rhodes that killed a 57-year-old woman and her 26-year-old daughter.
The head of the Rhodes District Prosecutor’s Office has filed a criminal charge of dangerous driving as a felony, which caused the deaths of two people.
The accused was brought before the investigating magistrate accompanied by police officers and his defence lawyers, asking for time to prepare his plea.
The accident occurred on Saturday afternoon, May 17, 2026, at the 18th kilometre of the Rhodes-Lindos highway. From the violent collision of the two vehicles, one of them overturned, trapping the two women who were in it.
Fire brigade forces with three vehicles were immediately mobilized at the scene for the rescue, as well as ambulances of the ambulance service and police forces. The two women were recovered unconscious and were pronounced dead a short time later.
The 44-year-old man suffered minor injuries, while two other people in the same vehicle did not suffer serious injuries.
According to the defendant’s allegations, he was driving above the speed limit, but he claims that the victims’ vehicle attempted a U-turn by violating a red light, which – he says – did not allow him to avoid the collision.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the case, examining critical elements such as the speeds of the vehicles, their path, and the operation of the traffic light at the time of the crash. The case is now moving to the regular inquest stage, where technical expert reports and witness statements are expected to clarify the exact circumstances of the tragedy.
