Skopelos has emerged as the top destination for travel experiences inspired by the famous film Mamma Mia, according to a list recently published by popular British entertainment website Virgin Media (https://www.virginmedia.com/the-edit/tv/where-was-mamma-mia-filmed).
In the extensive list of Greek destinations, Skopelos takes the top spot, identified as the ideal Greek island “kalokairi” of the musical and described as “the heart of Mamma Mia”, as it is the location where most of the film’s outdoor shooting took place, loved by millions of viewers around the world. The tribute highlights the island’s unique natural beauty, its lush green landscapes, pine forests that touch the sea, turquoise waters and picturesque little churches that were instrumental in creating the atmosphere of the film. Particular reference is made to the iconic chapel of Agios Ioannis in Kastri, where the famous wedding scenes were filmed, as well as to the beaches of Kastani and Glisteri, which were the setting for the most characteristic musical moments of the film.
The international recognition confirms the enduring appeal of Skopelos and the effort made to preserve its authenticity and enhance the island’s potential as a destination for film and thematic tourism. “Skopelos is not only the place where “kalokairi” came to life cinematically, but a destination with rich natural beauty, authentic hospitality, culture, gastronomy, nature activities and unique beaches that create experiences even outside the high season. We seek to keep alive the island’s connection with the globally loved musical Mamma Mia through original promotional activities, modern digital campaigns and online synergies with international media and travel platforms. Our goal is to continuously enhance the international visibility of Skopelos and to offer visitors the opportunity to play a leading role through their own experiences on the island of Mamma Mia,” said George Papadauid, Municipal Councillor for Tourism of the Municipality of Skopelos.
