A 51-year-old man working on the island of Gyali, which is near Nisyros, had his right arm amputated on the morning of Saturday 16 May.
The incident occurred during the unloading of materials with the special machine from a cargo ship. The foreign worker lost part of his right hand when in circumstances under investigation he became entangled in a conveyor belt. He was immediately taken to Kos Hospital where he underwent surgery and remains hospitalized, with his health condition described by doctors as stable.
The condition of the patient is still in good condition, he said.
For the incident, the North Dodecanese Labour Centre is calling for an in-depth investigation by the relevant authorities.
The statement from the Kos Labour Centre said that “it was neither an accident nor carelessness nor bad timing. It was a matter of time as the working conditions, the over-medicalization on this small piece of land hit red for years now, resulting in such sad incidents.”
According to the police, a case has already been filed against those responsible for the security of the site, statements have been taken from the police authorities, an autopsy has been conducted and an expert opinion has been sought.
