Authorities handcuffed the woman who abused an elderly dog to death on the island of Samos.

A case was filed against the woman, who caused fractures in the unfortunate animal’s skull, jaw and pelvis, by the Pythagorio Samos Police Department.

According to the ERT report, the case was solved after an investigation by the police authorities, who proceeded to identify the woman and form a case file.

The incident occurred on April 23 when a resident spotted the dog horribly abused. According to the Samos Animal Welfare Association, the dog, just 9 kilos, was taken to the veterinary clinic “where an even harsher picture of the tragedy began, as the multiple and brutal beatings she had received came to light”. The dog had lost her left eye, had fractures to her lower jaw, fractures to her skull, a severe injury to her right ear and a dislocation to the back of her left leg.

The Samos Animal Welfare Association said in a Facebook post that “the protection of animals is not the business of one man. It is a chain of responsibility. And when this chain works, justice can go all the way.

“The case of the elderly dog from Samos, who was found severely abused and eventually succumbed to her injuries after a multi-day battle to keep her alive, is a harsh but essential example of how many different links need to work together to bring an abuse case to justice: citizens, vets, police and the state.”

“From the very first moment there has been constant institutional monitoring of the case and cooperation between the Special Secretariat for the Protection of Companion Animals and the General Regional Police Directorate of the North Aegean, the competent police services of the D.A. Samos and the Samos Animal Welfare Association Samos Animal Welfare Association, which contributed decisively to the collection of testimonies and critical data,” he continues.

“The Greek Police proceeded with a thorough pre-trial procedure, with statements, cross-examinations and evaluation of evidence, ultimately leading to a felony charge of active killing of an animal,” it says.

“The animal was transferred to Chalkida for specialized treatment at the Pink Paws Vet Clinic of veterinarian Nefeli Sinou, while until the end of its hospitalization it was under the care of journalist Stamatina Stamatakou. Despite everyone’s superhuman efforts, the little dog did not make it.

Every case of abuse that comes to justice is the result of people who did not care. People who spoke up, testified, cooperated and persevered to the end.

Extreme violence against an animal does not suddenly appear, nor is it unique to the animal itself. Very often it is an indication of repeated abusive behaviour that may have occurred without being reported or detected in time. At the same time, international scientific studies have highlighted the link between animal abuse and wider forms of offending or violent behaviour towards people.”

“So, if you witness any form of violence or abuse towards an animal, do not be indifferent or silent. Report it immediately to the competent authorities. Early reporting can protect not only an animal, but also society itself from escalating violence.

Animal welfare cannot work in a piecemeal fashion. It requires institutional cooperation, social alertness and absolute respect for the processes of justice:

Silence protects the abuser, not the animal

Each complaint can save a life,” the association’s post stresses.
