The revelations that come to light in the trial for the brutal abuse of 3-year-old Angelos, with his mother and stepfather as defendants, at the Mixed Jury Court of Heraklion are shocking.

On the fourth day of the proceedings, the 19-year-old woman who first arrived home on the fateful morning and saw the child in critical condition testified.

“Angel, wake up” – The moment she found the child

The witness described waking up hearing voices inside the house.

“I heard shouting “Angel wake up! I went to see what was happening and saw the child lying on the couch,” he said.

According to her statement, the 45-year-old claimed that the boy had fallen and hit the coffee table while the mother was away from the house.

The resuscitation attempt

The 19-year-old described how she immediately tried to revive the child.

“I poked him and tried to see if he was reacting. Chris went to give him the kiss of life, but I told him that it doesn’t help. I gave him CPR about 30 times. He opened his eyes, cried and then passed out again,” he testified.

Soon afterwards the child’s mother arrived, who – the witness said – looked stunned and could not react.

“The child was frozen”

According to the testimony, when the ambulance arrived, the rescuers asked for a blanket because the child was frozen.

She also said she noticed visible signs of injury.

“I saw dried blood on his nose and a very large scratch on his back,” she said.

“I was not aware of the systematic abuse”

The witness explained that she knew the family through the 45-year-old’s daughter and had met young Angelo several times in the neighborhood and in the park.

“The little boy was happy. He waved at us when he saw us outside,” she said.

She admitted that she had heard the mother and her partner scolding the child in the past, but did not suspect the extent of the abuse she was allegedly experiencing.

“Sometimes she cried, but more like a child whining, not out of pain,” she testified.
