Tension occurred on Thursday morning (14/5) in Ano Liosia, when officers of the Rapid Response Police were involved in a chase that ended in a violent collision and injuries.
It all started when a patrol car crew attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling on Velisario Street. The driver failed to stop at the officers’ signal and picked up speed, attempting to flee, resulting in a chase through nearby streets in the area.
The vehicle ended up on Renaissance Street, where the situation escalated sharply. A large group of about 80 people reportedly gathered there and attacked the police officers.
The policemen were attacked with stones, sticks and various objects, and the official vehicle was damaged. Two police officers were injured in the scuffle, with one of them being taken to the 401 Athens General Military Hospital, suffering injuries from both blows and bites during the incident.
Authorities made three arrests, including the driver who failed to comply with the checkpoint and two women allegedly involved in the incidents.
Police are continuing to investigate to identify other participants, while increased surveillance remains in the area.
