Special army teams proceeded to a controlled explosion of about 100 kilograms of explosive material, which was found placed inside a barrel in the bow of the drone.
The drone has now been taken to Athens, where it is being examined by members of the Armed Forces in order to establish its origin, its technical characteristics and its exact purpose of use.
According to what the president of the dockworkers of Lefkada, Stathis Vasilatos, told ERT, the authorities were immediately mobilized as soon as the object was spotted and orders were given to have no contact with it.
As he described, the drone appeared to have an autonomous operating system, with GPS, batteries and a high-resolution camera. It had a low profile over the sea surface, which made it difficult to detect, especially at night.
The fishermen who found it immediately alerted the Coast Guard, and the drone was then taken by a Coast Guard boat to a safe distance from a residential area until experts could take over.
The investigations are now focused on the identity, country of origin and mission of the maritime drone, involving both military technicians and security agencies.
