The 67-year-old man, who broke into a bank branch in the centre of Thessaloniki with a hammer yesterday, was sentenced to early imprisonment.

He was prosecuted for attempted robbery and possession of a weapon – in addition to the hammer, he had a screwdriver and a pair of scissors on him.

Accused before the 1st regular interrogator of Thessaloniki, the 67-year-old allegedly said that he did not intend to harm anyone. He said it was reported that he went to the bank, demanding to be paid “the full amount of his pension.”

Through his attorney, he submitted a request to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine his attribution. Reports indicate that the 67-year-old has a history of mental health issues and has received relevant monitoring and is on court-ordered support.

According to his lawyer, depending on the findings of the psychiatric expert examination, it is not excluded that he may be taken to the psychiatric hospital of Korydallos prison.
