Serious revelations have come to light about an illegal shelter for the elderly in Ampelokipi, where four women lived in extremely difficult and unhygienic conditions.

The 72-year-old woman who presented herself as the manager of the structure was arrested after an operation by the Greek police, in the presence of a prosecutor and social services of the Attica Region. She was prosecuted for serious offences, including professional exposure and extortion.

According to the investigation, the elderly women had limited to non-existent communication with their relatives, as their personal phones had been removed and all contact was under control.

When authorities intervened at an apartment on Sevastopol Street, the accused allegedly initially refused entry and then tried to mislead police officers by giving inaccurate information.

The conditions found at the site were characterized as particularly poor, with poor care and hygiene problems. It is also reported that in some cases inappropriate food was provided.

The case was uncovered after a complaint by a relative of a guest who had agreed to monthly payments. However, according to the complaint, she was pressured for additional money, accompanied by threats.

One of the elderly women was taken to hospital where she was found to be malnourished, which heightened concerns about living conditions.

It is concerning that some relatives have said they are unable to take care of their people, with the relevant agencies now seeking appropriate and legal accommodation solutions for the remaining women.
