The 4-year-old boy who was seriously injured after a dog attack in Vatolakkos, Chania, is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of the University General Hospital of Heraklion.
The child’s health condition is described as serious but stable, with doctors closely monitoring his progress.
The evacuation of the child from Chania to Heraklion was carried out under police escort via the BOAK, in order to ensure the fastest possible transport. The ambulance was accompanied by qualified medical personnel and, upon arrival at the hospital, the child was transferred directly to the Children’s ICU.
Earlier, at the General Hospital of Chania, doctors performed lengthy surgical procedures, making great efforts to stabilize the child, as he sustained extensive injuries to his face and head.
How the incident happened
The incident occurred in the family’s backyard, where the child was with his grandmother. According to initial reports, he approached the dog to pet it, when – under unclear circumstances – the animal reacted violently and attacked him.
The 4-year-old suffered multiple and deep injuries, with lesions near the eyes, ears, sinuses and nose.
The authorities are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident, as well as possible liability related to the care of the animal.
