The 89-year-old man who caused panic with successive attacks on public services in Athens is expected to be brought before the prosecutor today, Wednesday, April 29.

The elderly man, who is being held at the Police Hall of Alexandra Avenue, allegedly opened fire at both the offices of the EFKA in Kerameikos and the Athens Court of First Instance in Loukareos Street, injuring a total of five people.

According to reports, he attributes his act to a personal issue related to his salary and retirement. According to him, although he receives pensions from the United States and Germany, he was seeking to have his pension recognized in Greece as well.

The timeline of the attacks

The attacker started from the area of Kato Patision and took a taxi to Kerameikos, where he entered the EFKA building at around 10:30. According to reports, he passed through without being detected by security, having a short-barreled shotgun hidden under his trench coat.

He ascended to the fourth floor, in the registration department, and opened fire, wounding an employee in the leg. The first officers on the scene immediately rendered aid, dressing the wound with a tourniquet.

Then the 89-year-old left the building and went, also by taxi, to the Athens Court of First Instance. There he fired again, causing the bullets to ricochet and injure four employees.

Security cameras have recorded his movements, with the gunman calmly walking away from the scene after the first attack, holding the gun in his hand.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the exact circumstances of the attacks and the case is expected to go to court.
