A serious case that could lead to a tragedy is being investigated by authorities in Rhodes, following an incident in which a mother and her minor child were allegedly in danger after a vehicle was swerved into a ravine.

According to preliminary investigation, the incident occurred on the evening of April 21, when the woman went to the residence of her 45-year-old estranged husband’s mother to pick up their three-year-old child. The man boarded the vehicle as a passenger and asked her for a ride to the Monte Smith area.

During the drive, he allegedly grabbed the steering wheel, attempting to steer the vehicle toward a cliff. The driver reacted immediately, turning in the opposite direction, resulting in a collision with another passing vehicle, causing property damage.

Then, according to the complaint, the 45-year-old man attempted to take control of the car, attempting to move into the driver’s seat and depress the pedals, but was unable to complete his action.

A short time later, he allegedly got into his own vehicle and swerved into a ravine about 60 metres deep, a short distance from the scene of the first incident. Officers who arrived at the scene located the vehicle, and reports indicate a strong odor of alcohol.

The 45-year-old was taken to Rhodes General Hospital and then to a psychiatric clinic, where he is being treated.

The testimony of the driver of the second vehicle, who said she saw the woman’s car making sudden and unexplained maneuvers before the collision, is considered crucial.

A case has been filed against the 45-year-old man for serious offences including attempted murder, dangerous driving, domestic violence offences and breaches of the Highway Code.
