Civil Protection measures for Santorini are in force following the publication of a new Joint Ministerial Decision by the Ministers of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, National Economy and Finance, Interior, Civil Protection, Development, Social Cohesion and Family, Maritime and Island Policy, Tourism.

More specifically, as highlighted in an announcement by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, the EIS incorporates the unanimous recommendation of the scientists, following the recent extraordinary meeting of the Standing Scientific Committee on Earthquake Risk Assessment and Earthquake Risk Reduction, as well as the recommendation of the Permanent Scientific Committee for the Monitoring of the Greek Volcanic Arc of the OASP and the recommendation of the Risk Assessment Committee for the re-evaluation of the restrictions on access and stay in specific areas of the volcanic complex due to geodynamic phenomena.

Note that the measures in force until 31.03.2027 are as follows:

a) In the Port of Athinios and the road network of Athinios Bay, it is decided to take traffic control measures to avoid traffic congestion on the road, both during the disembarkation and the departure of ships, with the ultimate aim of reducing the time they spend on the road and reducing the exposure of passengers on board. Position A on the road will remain free space in order to be used as an emergency area. No vehicles of any kind may be parked at the above location (Annex I).

b) In the Old Port of Fira and the upstream area that includes the port area of Old Fira Port, the cable car facilities and the Fira – Old Port path, access, transit and staying is allowed. Access and staying is not permitted in Area A of the Port as delineated on an attached map (Annex II).

c) Access to the Armeni Oia Settlement is permitted both from the sea and from the existing path as well as staying there.

d) In the settlement of Ammoudi:

A. On the Municipal Road to Ammoudi, the traffic and passage of vehicles is prohibited from the intersection of the Oia ring road to Ammoudi Port (Section A, Annex III). The reversal of incoming vehicles will be done by appropriate roadway landscaping at the height of the Municipal Parking Area. Excluded from this prohibition are catering vehicles during the hours 05.00 a.m. to 10.00 a.m. and up to 15 private passenger cars with up to 20 seats, which will enter on a rotational basis at the discretion of the Municipality of Thera to facilitate the movement of visitors. The passage of vehicles destined to and from the island of Thirassia is permitted.

B. Access and stay of persons is allowed in the Amoudi Settlement. Access by sea is permitted.

C. Access to and staying on the Ammoudi – Cape Agios Nikolaos Hiking Trail is prohibited (Section B, Annex III).

D. Access and staying is allowed on the Ammoudi – Oia Hiking Trail.

e) Access by land and sea and staying is allowed on the Thirassia Cove.

2. In cases of intense geodynamic or hydrometeorological phenomena, the above may be suspended or modified following the recommendation of the Commission for the Assessment of the Risk of Weather Events and all types of Civil Protection Risks, the Permanent Special Scientific Committee for the Assessment of Seismic Risk and Seismic Risk Reduction and the Permanent Scientific Committee for the Monitoring of the Greek Volcanic Arc.
