A 16-year-old man accused of a serious traffic accident on Liosia Street, where he hit and ran over a 16-year-old schoolgirl very seriously, is headed to jail after pleading guilty.

The 22-year-old passenger of the two-wheeler also entered a plea, who was released on probation.

The 16-year-old, originally from Sudan, reportedly expressed his grief over what happened and said he was ready to assist the 16-year-old girl and her family in whatever they needed. He said he takes full responsibility for what happened.

The accused explained that he was very scared when he realized what had happened, mainly because he did not have a driver’s license and that is why he fled the scene. He said that he was driving the motorbike because he was using it for his work and at that moment he was afraid that it would be taken away. He also stressed that he had no malice.

He added that when he realised what had happened, he decided to surrender to the police.

The 22-year-old co-passenger also allegedly said he panicked and lost his temper when the girl was hit.

The 22-year-old was given the conditions of compulsory appearance twice a month at a police station and a ban on leaving the country, and a €3,000 bail was set.
