The authorities arrested a 46-year-old man on Thursday morning (17/4), in connection with a case concerning the possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material.

The case was initiated following information transmitted through Europol, in cooperation with authorities in Sweden and Australia, as part of an international operation to identify users involved in sharing illegal material over the internet.

During the investigation, authorities managed to trace the 46-year-old man to Greece, using digital traces and data from online platforms. According to the information, he had stored a cloud folder with dozens of files, which became the starting point for further investigation of the case.

An organised operation and search of his home followed, in the presence of a judicial officer. Four computer hard drives were located and seized there, which were taken for laboratory examination.

The first on-site analysis of the digital evidence revealed the existence of hundreds of thousands of files (images and videos) containing child abuse material, allegedly depicting mainly very young children.

As it became known, the 46-year-old is no stranger to the authorities, as in the past he had been employed before for a similar case and had been subjected to restrictive conditions.

The seized digital media will be examined in detail by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, while the accused will be brought before the competent prosecutor.
