A month after her confession to Elina Papila that she had experienced abusive behaviour from Bampi Lazaridis – and the public dialogue that followed – Angeliki Iliadi appeared on the set of “To Porino” on Easter Tuesday.
During her interview with Giorgos Liagas, she spoke honestly and straightforwardly about what she has been through. At the beginning of the conversation, she particularly stood by the way the host publicly handled her confession, with the dialogue between them going as follows:
A.H. Do you like it?
GL I really like it, yes. I, you know, I appreciate honest people.
A.H. Okay, well, now what you’re saying, that’s a little strange to me, because…
G.L. Why?
A.H. I’ll tell you why. Because I expected a different attitude from you, the truth is, and after the interview I gave to Elina Papila, I saw that you took a very strange attitude towards me and I honestly didn’t expect it. You surprised me unpleasantly. What do I mean? Because we don’t know each other very well, over the years, I have an image of you that you are generally a person with many sensitivities, although it may not be apparent to most people, I have the ability to discern it. So when I go out and talk about something so hard and difficult that I lived through for five years, and I make an effort, how can I put it, my boy, as if I want to pull a thorn out of me… out of my guts, and close a wound… where that wound, so to speak, has been open for so many years without blood dripping. For there is not a drop to drip. And I see you saying “if” and “if” and “if” and “if”… you know how much… no, it made me sad, because I don’t get sad easily as a human being anymore…
G.L. You thought I should have said more clearly, what? That “but didn’t I say that a man did well and you…”
A.H. No, no. You were saying “if” and “if” and “if”, meaning you were expressing a doubt. I mean, what? I went out and lied? And if you don’t know, you ask. Because believe me…
G.L. But that’s why I called you today, to ask you… I don’t believe you lied…
A.H. Most people in the industry, most people and colleagues of yours… were more from the journalism industry even, because we’ve been on shows all the time over the years and we meet you. So, more from your field, it was the people who were the first to text me saying, “we knew it was common knowledge and we’re here for you,” do you know how happy that made me? And how much it pissed me off, so to speak, to hear you say “if and if and if and if”. There is no “if.” When a woman comes out and speaks so openly about something so ugly for no gain, instead exposing herself in front of the whole country, I’m saying something very much my own, and I’m saying it for very specific reasons.
G.L. The “if”, man, I said it because you know what happens… and the other side, which says… “I’ll sue”…
A.H. I don’t care about any other side! You saw that I, after the press release I sent out, with my lawyer, said this: Not everyone can come out in public and slander me, say whatever they want to say. You know that I, in this kind of thing, I never participated in this circus… Not everyone can come out and slander me and say that I’m lying. And it was written in the press release that “I consider a presenter who gives a platform to these people…” which to me, okay anyway, so let’s say now that they are people, “is complicit in the slander that can be done against me.”
G.L. Well, I gave both sides a platform… And I played your interview… …and the other side, who spoke up and said what they wanted to say. And like the lawyers.
Afterwards, Angeliki Iliadi went on to make a shocking confession, describing the abuse she experienced while pregnant…
“It was five years… I mean… one thing happened, one thing could go a while and nothing would happen, then it would happen again… the thing is that when you get into a situation like that, you get trapped, it’s very, very difficult.
All the times I tried to break it, the one time they grabbed my child out of my arms and said “you’re leaving, but you’re not going to see your child again”. Well… the other time, I might hear things like “I’ll do… this to your parents, I’ll do… that to your parents”…
There was a lot… in those interview days, and there was a lot of talk about benefits and things, all the things that were… offered to me. What was never heard was that I, over the years, worked like a dog. I worked all the time for very good money, very good pay. The money that I made for five years, which, believe me, was a lot of money, I never saw… and I never got my hands on it.
One time, when I dared to ask for my money, I was five and a half months pregnant, and I was on the floor… I was on the floor! Not from a push. From punching and kicking. I was five and a half months pregnant. It was the only time I dared to ask for my money…
No, they didn’t offer me everything, George, they took everything.
I will not accept anyone doubting my words… I will not accept anyone slandering me. Anyone who… thinks they can come out and say whatever they want will face the law, as I have already taken legal action against some people with injunctions, with lawsuits and with whatever it takes.”
