The Ladon Springs in Lycouria, one of the most evocative landscapes of the Greek countryside, is about to turn a new page. With the announcement of the study for their protection and exploitation, the Municipality of Kalavryta aims to highlight a spot that Pausanias himself praised in his “Achaica” for its unparalleled beauty.

Talking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, the mayor of Kalavryta, Thanasis Papadopoulos, gave the stamp of the initiative:

“The springs of the Ladon River are one of the most beautiful places in all of mountainous Greece and not only in Western Greece or the Peloponnese. The springs of Ladonas, located near the area of Lycouria, fully justify the reputation that ranks them among the rarest and most impressive monuments of nature, and Pausanias also praises the beauty of Ladonas and the surrounding area in his ‘Achaica’.

The springs of Ladonas are one of the most beautiful springs in Greece and the surrounding area.

Strategy with a focus on the environment
.
The study, with a budget of €167,000 funded by the Green Fund, covers an area of 50 hectares and places the highest priority on respecting the ecosystem. As the mayor notes:

“The study, which has already been announced through a public tender, is part of the strategy of the municipality of Kalavryta for the protection, gentle and environmentally friendly use of areas of outstanding natural beauty. And the axis of this logic is the symmetrical tourist promotion of poles that can work positively in stimulating tourism in all four municipalities of the municipality. The study will show us how to exploit the springs of the Ladon, always with absolute and non-negotiable respect for the environment. Very briefly and by way of example, I mention possible interventions, such as the creation of pedestrian and cycle paths, wooden structures for recreation and rest, a reception area with information material, promotion of the riparian zone, etc.”

Economic breath and prospects
Regarding the benefits that will arise, Thanasis Papadopoulos stresses to RES – MPE:

“We believe that when the intervention is completed, there will be multiplier effects, both in the protection and promotion of the springs of Ladonas, and in the local economy, with the creation of opportunities for business activities linked to the service of visitors and the character of the region and also with the creation of new jobs. Of course, to the very positive aspects of the intervention should be added the impact that will result in the promotion of the productive character and the excellent local products of the wider region.”

The vision of regeneration
.
The scope of the project includes an integrated grid of interventions ranging from the installation of information signs and lighting of the site to the creation of a modern visitor reception area. At the heart of the design is the enhancement of the riparian area over a length of at least 300 metres, with the creation of a pedestrian walkway around the perimeter of the pond and the installation of elegant wooden recreational structures. At the same time, the construction of a vehicular bridge and pedestrian bridge is planned, as well as the development of a bicycle path linking the springs to nearby points of interest, such as the historic Pausanias Clam.

An integrated tourist destination
The implementation of the project is expected to act as a catalyst for attracting tourists and hikers, integrating the springs of Lycouria into the strong network of Kalavryta next to the Ski Centre, Odontotos and the Cave of Lakes. Beyond tourism promotion, the study places special emphasis on flood protection and addressing threats such as water pollution and lack of firefighting infrastructure, ensuring that this rare ecosystem is shielded against degradation.
