Significant quantities of firecrackers, flares and related pyrotechnics were found in a house in Salamina as part of the special police action “Spark-Down”, with authorities making a total of five arrests.

Specifically, officers of the O.P.C.E. and the Salamis Crime Investigation and Detection Department spotted a suspicious vehicle with three passengers and called it in for a check yesterday at noon.

206 firecrackers, two flare guns and metal capsules were found inside the vehicle and seized, with the three men arrested as police said they had just obtained the illegal items.

The suppliers of the firecrackers were identified during the preliminary investigation and a search was carried out at their home in Salamis.

A large quantity of pyrotechnics, including 1.159 firecrackers, 700 flares, 100 sparklers, five flare guns and 11,800 metal capsules, as well as cash in the amount of 9,232 euros and 149,000 Albanian lek.

According to the authorities, the two accused – a 69-year-old local resident and a 70-year-old foreigner – were active in the systematic illegal trade and disposal of the items on the island, storing them inside their home. In fact, part of the seized goods was found thoroughly hidden in a refrigerator and an empty tank.

A case was filed against them for violation of the legislation on flares and fireworks, while all those arrested were taken to the competent prosecutor.

The General Police Directorate of Attica notes that controls will continue with undiminished intensity throughout Attica, aiming to prevent dangerous incidents and protect the safety of citizens in view of the Easter season.
