With the usual solemnity, but in a highly charged atmosphere due to the ongoing war in the Middle East, the ceremony of the Unveiling of the Holy Light in Jerusalem is currently taking place at noon on Holy Saturday (11.4.26).
The Greek delegation has been in Jerusalem since 09:00 this morning, and will receive the Holy Light from the Church of the Resurrection and under draconian security measures, and transport it to Athens.
The Holy Light will be carried to Athens by the head of the mission and representative of the government, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs responsible for issues of Hellenes Abroad, Yannis Loverdos, the Archbishop of the Holy Sepulchre in Athens and a representative of the Holy Synod.
The Greek delegation will attend the touching ceremony and then, at the Patriarchate, Patriarch Theophilos III will hand over the Holy Light to Mr. Loverdos. The special flight, which is being carried out by a government aircraft, is expected to return to “Eleftherios Venizelos” at approximately 18:30 – 19:00.
After that, 18 special flights are scheduled to distribute the Holy Light throughout the Greek territory.
