With an emphasis on enhancing security and preventing dangerous incidents in the main port of Piraeus, security officials of the Central Port Authority proceeded to arrest a 25-year-old local man for possession of drugs and dangerous pyrotechnic materials.

The operation was carried out in the afternoon hours yesterday, as part of targeted controls for the prevention and suppression of illegal actions, by the Regional Narcotics Task Force (P.O.D.N.) and the Security Office of the Piraeus Port Authority, with the assistance of a specially trained police dog.

The 25-year-old was found inside a passenger ferry, having in his hand luggage a plastic package with cannabis plant extracts of a total gross weight of 11.1 grams. At the same time, a significant quantity of pyrotechnics and flares were found in his possession, namely six naval parachute rockets, five hand-held smoke grenades, two fireworks and a “barrel” type daytime smoke grenade.

The finds were immediately seized, while the arrested man faces charges for breaches of the Substances and Fireworks Act.
