The Independent Market and Consumer Protection Authority has significantly intensified its controls throughout the country, with the aim of ensuring healthy competition and effective consumer protection, especially in this period of increased demand.
The Authority underlines the above in a statement and announces that, to date, more than 300 inspections have already been carried out throughout the country, while its presence will be further strengthened in the next two days, with increased operational mobilization in critical market areas.
According to the Authority’s data so far, today, Maundy Thursday, lamb prices are at similar levels to last year:
– Supermarkets: from 11.49 – 11.90 Euro/kl (in over 98% of the SMs market weighted)
– Large markets (e.g. Varvakeios): from 8.99 Euro/kl
It is noted in the statement that the most complete and objective picture of the price evolution will be formed during the peak of the commercial activity in the next two days, when the final offers of the market will be reflected.
In addition, and on the occasion of recent publications and public statements that created false impressions about the operation of the controls, the Authority reminds that the controls are carried out on the basis of the current institutional framework, with a fully targeted methodology and the use of modern digital tools. Through the daily analysis of data from the Fuel Price Observatory and other monitoring systems, deviations are immediately identified and control mechanisms are activated where intervention is really needed. The effectiveness of controls is not reflected in the number of auditors, but in the right targeting, technological support and speed of response – as demonstrated by the Authority’s recent findings and interventions in Attica, Rhodes and Crete.
The Authority underlines that it will continue with the same intensity of controls so that the market operates with rules, transparency and healthy competition, ensuring that consumers have real choice, product adequacy and fair prices.
