An alarm was raised at the Rhodes General Hospital not only by the seriousness of a pediatric case, but by a sudden development that changed the hospitalization data within a few hours.

A 4-month-old infant, from Israel, who had been admitted for symptoms of respiratory distress and a clinical presentation requiring monitoring, was suddenly found outside the hospital despite medical advice to the contrary, causing an immediate alarm about his fate and the danger to which he may have been exposed.

His return to the hospital later, in a visibly more serious condition, led to urgent medical interventions, intubation and finally transfer to Athens by ambulance, in a case that rapidly evolved from a medical incident to a case with police and prosecutorial actions, while, according to information from “Demetiki”, the infant has now been stabilized, the risk has evolved and is expected to come out of intensive care within 2 days.

The events begin on the night of Thursday 2 April 2026 to Friday 3 April 2026, when an Israeli couple aged 32 and 30 went to the Emergency Department of the Rhodes General Hospital, accompanying their 4-month-old infant. The infant was experiencing difficulty breathing, fever and decreased feeding.

The infant was examined by an on-call pediatrician and was deemed to require admission to the clinic for hospitalization, given his presentation and the symptoms recorded. This decision meant monitoring, clinical and laboratory testing and supportive care.

.

However, a few hours later, at approximately 4:00 a.m. on April 3, 2026, the parents, took the infant and left the hospital despite the treating physician’s contrary opinion. This departure is recorded as a discharge without the medical authorization that had been requested and when the infant had been determined to need to remain for hospitalization.

The incident caused disruption at the clinic and triggered authorities. The police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office were informed about the child endangerment incident and the case took a dramatic turn in the afternoon of the same day.

At 19:55 on April 3, 2026, the infant was again transported to the Rhodes General Hospital by ambulance of EKAB, presenting respiratory distress. Due to the severity of his condition, he was immediately transferred to the Pediatric Clinic.

A clinical and laboratory examination and a chest X-ray followed. The findings, according to the same information, showed septic shock, shock due to pneumonia. This picture depicts a critical and immediately life-threatening context that required rapid decisions and urgent interventions.

Due to the severity of the incident, the infant was intubated. Intubation was deemed necessary as a measure to support respiratory function, while procedures were initiated for transfer to a hospital in Athens, in order to continue treatment in a specialized pediatric environment.

According to information from “Demetiki”, the ambulance was called and the transfer was organized for the early morning hours of Saturday, April 4, 2026, to the Athens Children’s Hospital “Aghia Sophia”. The air ambulance was accompanied by the father, while the mother remained in Rhodes, as the family has 3 other minor children who were staying at the hotel where they were staying during their holiday.

The infant, despite his severe presentation, responded to stabilization after intubation and overall management. The risk has progressed and it is estimated that, barring complications, he will be able to be discharged from intensive care within 2 days.

The criminal investigation into child exposure and actions in Rhodes

Along with the medical development, the criminal investigation aspect has evolved. After being informed of an incident of child endangerment and the facts of leaving the hospital without medical clearance, police officers went to the hotel where the family was temporarily staying in Rhodes and located the mother. An arrest followed as part of the proceedings that had been initiated.

The mother expressed complaints about the conditions she claims were in the premises, as well as allegations that there was communication with nursing staff before she left, with her version of events presenting the exit as a result of instructions she claims were given.

The mother was released on a prosecutor’s order and the preliminary investigation continues.
