The son of New Left MP Theanos Fotiou has passed away at the age of 48.

New Left notes in a statement: “It is with great sorrow that we bid farewell today to our comrade Vassilis Rizos. Vassilis, son of Theanos Fotiou and Dimitris Rizos, had intertwined his so short life with his knowledge and action in Architecture, the Left and Athens.

.

A brilliant architect with distinctions in international and national architectural competitions, he was involved in “space” not only professionally but also kinematically and politically. Since his student days he was a man of his city, his neighbourhood, the Ampelokipi, and its people. Member and candidate of the “Alliance for a progressive TEI”, of the municipal party, Open City, but also a steady member of the Board of the Cultural Association of Ano Ampelokipi, he put into practice what he believed in the active action of left-wing people.

Wherever there was a question of claiming and planning public space in Athens, he was present. As a member of “Anaplasi Athens”, in 2018-2019, he was responsible for the redevelopment project of the Refugees of Alexandra Avenue. In the stone years of the humanitarian crisis, as a member and later coordinator of “Solidarity for All”, he was always there for anyone in need. His contribution to the first government of the Left, the “No Intermediaries” market law, was important.

.

Vassilis was a member of SYRIZA and then of Nea Aristara. Together with his mother Theano, he and his mother had designed the offices of SYRIZA, and the offices of Nea Aristara also have his architectural signature.

Vassilis was above all a very sweet son, father, friend, a man who left us very young and very unexpectedly. To Theano, his son Dimitri and all his family and friends, my deepest condolences.”
