A student from Thessaloniki, who was on a school trip to Ioannina, where he consumed cannabis products, was taken to hospital. Health Minister Adonis Georgiades spoke about the incident in a social media post.

In response to an incident in Ioannina, where a student ended up in hospital after consuming cannabis products while another wandered around in confusion, Adonis Georgiades made a public intervention, stressing that the new bill being put out for public consultation provides for significant restrictions on the availability of specific products.

According to epiruspost.gr, the incident occurred when students from Thessaloniki, who were in Ioannina on a field trip, visited a shop selling cannabis products.

There they procured relevant products, which they consumed, resulting in one student experiencing severe malaise and dizziness and being taken to hospital.

Shortly afterwards, police authorities were mobilised to locate a second student, who had lost his bearings and was moving in an unknown direction, in a confused state.

The following were arrested in the case:

  • the store clerk for selling products to minors,
  • the teacher-leader of the excursion for putting a minor in danger,
  • and the mother of the student who was hospitalized.

In a related post, Health Minister Adonis Georgiades addressed the issue, noting that a ban on the sale of the drugs from kiosks is being promoted, as well as stricter age controls in special shops, with the aim of limiting access to minors.

He stressed that the government is seeking to “put an end to the promiscuity” observed in the market for these products.

“In our bill that goes out for public consultation this week we are banning the sale of all these products from kiosks and drastically restricting access with a minor’s verification in special shops. We are putting an end to promiscuity,” the health minister wrote characteristically on X.
